Why automated trimming eats yield
A hand-trim crew makes a judgment call on every flower. An automated line without an inspection layer can't - so to avoid paying people to finish flower by hand, operators run it tight enough to finish everything in one pass. That process turns good flower into trim. It was never the machine's fault; it's what any machine does when nothing downstream is judging the result. That's the trade most operations made without pricing it.
If your yield is under 70%, there are typically 5 to 8 points on the table, with recoveries of 3.6 to 8.2 points documented across production evaluations. The practical ceiling is 80% - nobody gets everything back, and anyone promising more is guessing.
