60-Acre Outdoor Grow
(Michigan, USA)
- Cannabis producer, cultivator and processor
- 200 employees
- 60 acres under cultivation
The Problem
Outdoor harvests arrive in a short, weather-sensitive window. Grip Cannabis needed to trim, sort, and grade very large volumes fast enough to protect late-season material from fall conditions, without ballooning labor.
Previously, 30 to 50 people worked up to 20 hours a day and still could not keep pace. That drove costs into the millions and put late batches at risk.
The Solution
Grip implemented the Marvel AI GEN 3 machine as the intelligence layer between existing equipment, automating quality control and flow-routing across the line.
T-Zero performs the first-pass trim and S1 separates micro-flowers. Marvel AI GEN 3 then inspects for infections and trim quality, flagging and routing contaminated or subpar flowers. Subpar flagged flowers are auto-routed to the T2 Tandem for re-trimming, which cuts manual rework and cost.
The result is intelligent decisioning, not just automation: a closed-loop flow where Marvel evaluates trim quality and contamination, determines the optimal next step, and executes that step in one pass.
The Results
- 62% lower labor costs about $700,000 saved per harvest season.
- 100% faster trimming throughput roughly 2x the speed of the previous season, with less than half the crew.
- Consistent quality across all batches automated inspection and routing standardize trim quality.
- Payback in about 2 weeks per postharvest manager Corey Lord.
Before Marvel vs. After Marvel
| Metric | Before | With Marvel |
|---|---|---|
| Labor cost per season | Into the millions | 62% lower, about $700,000 saved |
| Post-harvest crew | 30 to 50 people | Under half the crew |
| Daily hours to keep pace | Up to 20 hours a day, still behind | Keeps pace at 2x throughput |
| Trimming throughput | Baseline | 100% faster, about 2x |
| Quality across batches | At risk under time pressure | Consistent across all batches |
| Quality control and rework | Manual inspection and rework | Automated inspection, subpar flowers auto-routed to T2 Tandem |
| Flow decisions | Manual, step by step | Closed-loop: Marvel decides and executes in one pass |

- AI inspection and flow-routing system from Twister Technologies that evaluates trim quality and contamination and routes each flower to the optimal next step.
- Closed-loop flow control
- A control approach where the system evaluates quality and contamination, determines the optimal next step, and executes it in one pass, instead of relying on manual decisions.
- T-Zero
- Twister Technologies trimming machine that performs the first-pass trim in Grip's post-harvest line.
- S1
- Separation equipment that pulls micro-flowers out of the main product stream.
- T2 Tandem
- Twister Technologies re-trimming machine that receives subpar flagged flowers for a second pass.
- Post-harvest
- The stage after cannabis is cut, covering trimming, sorting, and grading before packaging.
